What is the "Onboard Mindset"?

At the recent DFNI Cruise Conference in Barcelona, retail leaders from across the sector came together to discuss a fundamental truth that shapes our industry: The single most important reason why cruise retail works is the crew. This is a statement heard again and again, but looking at our industry directly from the perspective of the crew reveals exactly why that is the case.
Hello, I am Adrian from Cruise Retail Academy and I was on stage to share some key insights from the perspective of the onboard crew, and this contained a blueprint to what are the superpowers of onboard retailers, and why they are so important to understand. So in this blog, I would like to share a few of these with you - so you can really understand what separates land-based retailers from those selling on the oceans.

When we look across the global fleet—with over 300 cruise ships currently active on the seas—we see an incredible diversity of operators, ship sizes, and canvases. Yet, regardless of the vessel, there is a distinct attitude, an energy, and an infectious enthusiasm that connects everyone who works onboard. It is a singular onboard mindset that completely changes their outlook and their attitude toward everything.
For land-based brands, suppliers, and partners, understanding this mindset isn't just a point of interest—it's a commercial necessity.
WHY SHOPPIES ARE THE ULTIMATE RETAIL ENGINE
Data shared earlier on the DFNI stage from research agency Mindset highlights just how profoundly shipboard staff drive revenue compared to traditional land-based retail environments:
61% of cruise guests interact directly with crew members while in onboard shops.
82% of those guests who interact are actively influenced to buy by the onboard crew.
This tells us that over 50% of all onboard retail sales happen because of the crew.
In reality, most industry insiders with data to hand know that this number is actually much higher because we know how much crew influence and inspire guests to buy.
On a ship, a product rarely sells itself from a shelf. Anyone who has gone onboard for a cruise or to deliver brand training can feel that cruise retail crew are entirely different from land-based associates. At the Cruise Retail Academy, our job is to take great retailers from airports, downtown luxury boutiques, Bond Streets, or Champs Élysées, and prepare them for this life-changing shift.

As you can see in this image, our job is to help shoppies transit from a land mindset into an onboard mindset. And this means that we have to unlock the 3 superpowers from individuals to ensure they have got what it takes to be successful at sea.
To unlock that commercial potential, every crew member must master three distinct "superpowers" that define the onboard mindset.
THE 3 KEY SUPERPOWERS OF THE ONBOARD MINDSET
1. RESILIENCE: Navigating the 24/7 Reality of Life at Sea
So by resilience, let’s start by explaining how these retailers get from Bond Street to Barcelona terminal. When somebody is going to be working on a cruise ship, it's not like you get offered a job today and you step on the cruise ship tomorrow.
No, not at all.
Getting on board can be a journey that can take up to a year. Imagine that you got offered a job today and you knew that that job was going to start till June 2027. How motivated would you be for it and how determined will you be? Well, that journey over the next year involves costs. It involves time and a huge amount of self motivation. It involves getting medicals, STCW safety security training, C1D visas, seamen books, medicals, vaccinations, passports, police background checks, you name it, the amount of forms and paperwork shoppies have to complete is extraodinary!
To step on board in a year's time. And then steping up that gangway, somewhere on the other side of the world, knowing that they're going to be away from friends and family for the next 6 months, that this cabin is their home.

Now they're going to be on this city at sea for the next 6 months, sharing this cabin with a stranger. Working 7 days a week, working up to 14 hours a day in an environment that they've never been on before. Now, just imagine what that must do to you in terms of the way that you how you position it in your mind. Could you do it?

And not only that, remember that anything can happen at sea. You know, from rough weather to pandemics, deliveries missing the ship, ports of call being missed, changing nationalities and demographics. Imagine working at Hamburg in Germany to find that you are now in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil later.
We are throwing every possibility at these guys and expecting them to deliver exceptional service through that level of at that level of challenge.
The Superpower: Resilience is the ability to maintain a high-energy, positive retail presence when anything can happen at sea. From changing itineraries to tight cabin living spaces, retail crew must remain mentally agile, professional, and consistently welcoming to fresh waves of guests every single week.

2. CONFIDENCE: The Power of Personal Impact
In the cruise ecosystem, the old retail adage holds truer than anywhere else: people buy people. Guests are not buying brands, they are buying the shoppies. Shoppies need to have confidence in who they are, what they represent and how they share their knowledge.
Sales = Success: Crew members operate under high-pressure environments where performance is directly tied to their livelihood and career progression. The more sales you achieve, the more recognition happens and the greater chances to progress to the next role in the career ladder.
Present to Sell. Standing on a stage in front of 800 people to talk about gemstones, hosting a whisky tasting seminar to talk about different Scotch whiskies, hosting a private collection party for VIP guests
Don't Be Afraid. Speaking to thousands of different guests every week from across the world can be daunting. But to make money, earn commission and achieve targets, shoppies have to step forward, raise their voice, bring their energy to every situation and really 'go for it'! Cruise retail is not the place for shy people.

The Superpower: The confidence to command a luxury space, tell a compelling brand story, and close high-value sales. Onboard retailers don't wait for customers to browse passively—they use their personal confidence to capture attention and "make it happen!" on the sales floor.
3. CONNECTION: Treating the Entire Ship as a Shop Floor
Unlike land-based retail workers who say goodbye to a customer at the cash register, cruise retail staff live alongside their guests for days or weeks at a time. Imagine being a shoppie on a world cruise and having 800 guests who are travelling with you for 160 days. How would you achieve your sales? The answer is "connection"/
Trust & Rapport: A guest might see their retail associate every day, at the bar, at the buffet, at gala night, at the gangway, pass them on the pool deck, or cross paths in the corridor. Remembering small details, understanding who they are, what their motivation is and showing empathy is truly important.
The entire ship is your shop floor. 2000 crew who are working on a ship are potentially all connected to retail and can support you in achieving the sales performances that shoppies need. Who will promote your shop, who will bring someone to you, who is giving you "share of voice"? Connecting onboard to get things done and get opportunities happening is highly important
Building a support network with fellow retailers. People you work on ships have an amazing connection to people they have worked with previously. Staying connected and supportive is absolutely at the heart of this mindset. You'll see people who work in the cruise industry. They're the guys that have got 4000 friends on Facebook. Because they've understood absolutely how important it is to connect to share experiences, challenges, successes and opportunities.

The Superpower: True connection means realizing that the entire ship is the shop floor. Successful crew build deep trust, foster genuine rapport outside the store, and build their profiles within the cruise community to draw guests naturally back into the retail environment.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
Transitioning from luxury boutiques, airports, or high-street retail from across the world to a career at sea requires a shift in strategy. Use this four-step checklist to prepare for the unique cruise ship environment:
Step 1: Audit and Showcase Your Transferable Retail / Sales / Service Skills
Before applying, reposition your land-based experience to match what cruise employers look for within your CV, and at your interview:
Highlight High-Value Categories: Emphasize any experience you have in luxury sectors like fine jewelry, Swiss timepieces, beauty, or high-end spirits.
Demonstrate Target-Driven Confidence: Cruise retail is highly performance-motivated. Quantify your sales achievements, KPIs, and how you consistently "make it happen" on the sales floor.

Step 2: Mentally Prepare for the "Resilience Factor"
Life at sea is an extraordinary journey, but it demands serious mental readiness for a complete lifestyle shift:
Evaluate the Schedule: Learn with our free E-Academy to fully prepare yourself. Ensure you are fully prepared to commit to working 7 days a week for contracts lasting up to 6 months.
Adaptability Check: Practice flexibility in your current role. At sea, itineraries change, and spaces are shared; showing a calm, agile attitude under pressure is a massive hiring advantage.
Step 3: Shift Your Sales Perspective to "Whole-Ship Connection"
Onboard retailers don't just work behind a counter; they are brand ambassadors across the entire vessel.
Practice Cross-Functional Rapport: In your current role, practice building deep, immediate trust with customers and specifically build great success stories you can share. Think about how you would engage with guests if you ran into them outside of the store environment.
Develop Public Confidence: Work on your public speaking and presentation skills. You will need the confidence to host onboard seminars, brand uniform showcases, or shop events.

Step 4: Apply Through Specialized Cruise Retail Partners
Do not just send a generic resume to a standard job board. Target the specific concessionaires and academies that manage shipboard shops:
Bridge the Gap: Utilize specialized training and recruitment platforms like the Cruise Retail Academy, which specifically focuses on taking top-tier land-based retailers (from Bond Street to Champs Élysées) and equipping them with the exact onboard mindset needed to succeed globally.
