Cruise retail is the onboard shopping offer that you can find on most of the large cruise ships sailing across the oceans. The department consists usually of between 2-12 shops selling a number of different products and categories. Usually a team of between 10-40 people are employed to run the operation, consisting of many different positions such as shop manager, product specialists, sales associates.

​ Cruise retailing is run by a mixture of concession operators (such as Starboard, Heinemann, Effy, Harding+, Avolta, Diamonds International) or sometimes by in-house teams (such as MSC, Aida, Costa).

You should gain approval from us before any travel is arranged to ensure that all costs are able to be reimbursed back to you.

Once the visit has been completed, you should complete the expenses form, which is available on the CRA+ Hub, and then ensure that the value of the expenses is included in the invoice you send us.

On the CRA+ HUB web page, we have our expenses claim form. Each time you have expenses, you should complete this form attaching clear photos of all your receipts. You can send through as many expenses forms as needed. Once you have completed this, please add the total expenses amount per ship visit onto the invoice you send us.

All approved expenses will be repaid as part of your payment within 14 days of submission.

Expenses claims must be in line with the CRA+ Travel Policy, which you can also find on the CRA+ HUB page.

We will connect you directly with the brand who we are working with. They will provide you with a pre-embarkation set of training courses and qualifications so you can achieve 'Train the Trainer' status. We would also ask that you complete all CRA+ courses on the E-Academy. You should send us your request to join, and then we will invite you to access these courses.

Other training may involve E-Learning courses, video calls or visiting various websites to learn the key details.

You will need to be signed off by a brand, before you can conduct any ship visit.

We understand that going onboard for the first time can be a bit scary. We fully understand this!

We have written a Life Onboard course in our E-Academy, so you can learn more about what steps you will need to go through to get onboard, and then what it will be like when you arrive on the ship.

In terms of the requirements needed to get onboard for the first time, we have a page full of useful information for you:

This is a very difficult question to answer, as it will depend on how ready you are to join.

If you need to get new medicals, visas, vaccinations etc, then the process can take up to 6 months depending on your country.

If you are 'ship-ready', and the operator has a suitable position, then the time period can be as little as 6-8 weeks.

Key factors are:

- Your preparation Time

- Notice Period needed to leave other jobs

- Position readiness from operator

- Position readiness of destination ship

You will need to be patient and pretty flexible in embarking into a cruise retail job for the first time, as it is important to get you onto the right ship with the right level of support.

When you leave your current job before embarking foe the first time, it is important to mention this to us immediately, so we can ensure the cruise retail operator is fully alligned.

You should have your own laptop computer or tablet that you can host training sessions with. If you don't have one then we can purchase for you, but the cost will be deducted from your freelancer payment.

You may also receive some supply training material from the brands, such as samples, marketing graphics, GWP's etc. You will need to take these onboard any ship that you visit, and use them as per the brand's instructions.

We will ask that all training / audit / merchandising visits are completed using the visit report which we will ask you to complete.

This will include:

- signatures from all trained persons

- photos from merchandised displays

- audits of sections.

These visit reports will then be sent to the brand, who will verify to us if they have been completed correctly. Once we receive this verification, we will classify the visit as being signed off and we will pay your submitted invoice.

To sign up for a ship visit, you complete the Ship Visit Booking Form.

If this visit is approved, we will send you a SHIP VISIT BRIEF, which will include the specific goals of the visit alongside the renumeration for the day. You should sign the SHIP VISIT BRIEF and return it back to us.

We will assign ship visits for Academy Freelancers based on your experience, skills and on your location. We will do this by sending you a VISIT BRIEF after you have submitted your visit booking form.

Please note, to reduce travelling costs, the nearer you are to a ship port, the higher likelihood that you will be approved for an assignment.

We can help! The Cruise Retail E-Academy will be the perfect place to get all the training you will need across many of the top brands that you will find onboard. There are new courses being added each week, so it is a great way to get passionate about the amazing products you will find onboard.

Each assignment will be accompanied by a 'VISIT BRIEF FORM' which will be sent by email to you once an assignment has been approved. This will include a detailed list of tasks that you will need to complete on each visit. These tasks have been specified by each of the brands and therefore will need to be correctly fulfilled.

You will be required to sign this form as your agreement to complete the ship visit.

Yes, you will need to pass a medical examination to work on a cruise ship. This is a requirement set by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to ensure the health and safety of all crew members and passengers.

A trunk show is an event where a brand or supplier presents its merchandise to the guests onboard for a limited period of the cruise. Usually hosted by a retail ambassador, they can be seminars, theatre shows and will be attended by invited guests. If you are looking for a job as a retail ambassador, check out our jobs page.

​There are many different positions in the retail department onboard. From sales associate to port shopping expert, from brand ambassador to shop manager, you will find loads of different options.

This is a true cruise retail expert question, and it is a great piece of information to know!

PPD is the usual measure for targets in cruise retail. It means the Passenger-revenue Per Day. So basically it is the total sales for the cruise divided by the number of passengers divided by the number of days. ​ So, $100,000 with 5 days cruise and 2,000 passengers would be... (100000 / 5 / 2,000 = $10 PPD)

Cruise retail is a global industry. You will have the chance to visit many different destinations around the world.

Understanding the timing before getting onboard is a key skill.

It is important that you do not resign from your current role or from any studies until after your medical, visa and paperwork have all been accepted and cleared by your cruise retail operator and you are waiting scheduling.

It is a daunting task to attempt to pack everything you will need into a suitcase for seven months, especially as you will probably experience several different climate conditions during your contract. The following list is designed only as a suggestion as to what you may need to pack:

• Blackwork shoes (comfortable) slip resistance

• Black running/walking/tennis shoes

• Head covering or hat

• Sunglasses & Suntan lotion

• Sufficient underwear, socks, or pantyhose

• Toiletries (although these are available in the shop on board or ashore)

• Alarm Clock

• Swimsuit and beachwear

• Lightweight jacket or sweater

• Black dress (for female Team Members)

• Complete Black Business suit, shirt, and tie (for male Team Members)

• Casual clothing for free time wear

• Camera

• Voltage adapter. Whilst there is 110v - 220v power onboard, it is useful to have an international adapter

​ Don't bring Irons, Large Stereo Systems or duvets / quilts.

You will receive a basic salary, and then depending on the cruise retail operator, you will receive a commission as well usually linked to sales or other targets (KPI's). Earnings can vary a lot between the different seasons, ships, shops. We can explain more, if you receive an invitation for an interview. Afterwards, you should talk with your cruise retail operator to find out more.

When shopping at the onboard stores, guests won't be able to use cash for your purchases. Instead, all transactions require a specific card provided to guests at the beginning of their journey. This card is used not only for buying items but also for accessing various amenities and services on board.

Why Use the Onboard Card System?

• Convenience: Carrying a single card instead of cash streamlines your shopping experience, allowing for quick and easy purchases.

• Security: The card system reduces the need to carry large sums of money, keeping your funds secure.

While cash has its place for some personal expenses during excursions, onboard shopping requires the use of this dedicated card to ensure a hassle-free and smooth experience.

Depends on the type of day. Sea days usually are the most hours as shops are open, port days can be less hours dependant on whether there is a delivery or inventories to be completed. The working time rules onboard are goverened by the MLC.

Shopping is an important part of a cruise experience. With guests choosing products which are relevant to their vacation, to purchase a gift for family / friends or to treat themselves by finding some thing new, shopping is really enjoyed across the different ships around the world. ​ Most cruise ships sell at tax and duty free which makes the pricing competitive for people to buy and as a result will usually only open when the ships are sailing in international waters. ​ In our E-Academy we have a number of courses for you to learn about cruise ships and cruise retail.

Most large cruise ships have around 4-8 shops onboard. Usually there will be a - perfumes & cosmetics shop, a duty free shop, a fashion shop, a logo items shop, a watches & jewellery shop. Some ships have mono brand shops where only 1 brand is sold in them. ​​ On smaller cruise ships, usually there will be 1-2 shops onboard with a mix of categories sold in them. ​ We have a number of courses in our E-Academy designed to help you really learn more, such as 'What is Cruising?' and 'Introduction to Cruise Retail'.

Usually between 5 - 8 months depending on the cruise line, the season and where you come from. In the application process to find a job onboard you should discuss this with your prospective cruise retail operator, as there is quite a bit of change across the industry.

MINIMUM

The minimum age you need to be to work in the retail department on a cruise ship is 21 or older. You need to by physically fit, able to carry heavy loads if needed and able to be on the move for a number of hours a day.

MAXIMUM

According to most cruise line employment policies, there is no maximum age to work on a cruise ship; as long as you meet the physical and job requirements, you can apply regardless of age, although some positions may favour younger applicants due to the demanding nature of the work.

Yes. It maybe necessary for us to conduct the necessary confidential background checks, including but not limited to criminal record, employment history, & educational qualifications. Or, for some cruise lines you will be required to conduct the DBS checks yourself and show proof of this.
