What are the "Must-Have" Technical Foundations?
Let's start with the must-have technical skills that you absolutely must have to get your first job in cruise retail. You should be able to answer 'yes' to all these skills in order to look through other points in our list. Let me start by being honest, if you cannot say yes to these skills just yet, then better to get more experience in them before you apply.
1) At least 1-2-years land-based experience in retail or sales
The most requested skill that cruise retailers are looking for is to show that you have experience in sales. This is where 'you' have made the difference in selling products or services, not simply following instructions or being part of a big retailer. What did you do differently? So if you have never worked in a shop, what else have you done that has required personal skills in selling? If you have not worked in any individual or team sales before, then it is best to get experience of this on land before applying for any role in cruise retail. It's my single biggest tip in all of this blog. Because, you will be asked questions about sales, inventories, POS, merchandising, UPT's (Units per transaction), so having a strong foundation in retail / sales is simply essential.
2) Be able to speak English fluently
Nearly all cruise ships will require you to understand, write and speak English well. If you have anything lower than B2 English level, then my advice to you is that should look to gain experience in learning to be able to achieve the right standard. Your interview will be in English and your skills will be immediately assessed.
3) Strong customer service skills
Sales will not be enough. Retailing is all about the mix of retail and service combined together to build trust. Especially with new important positions being added to the industr such as ambassadors, concierges and influencers. These are roles that simply use the ability to built relationships, service and trust to sell. So, to work in cruise retail you will need to have a good experience of good customer service skills, trust building and you will need to show what and how you make a difference to drive these.
4) Be ready and prepared to get the necessary safety certifications
To work on a cruise ship it is mandatory that you will need 5 main things to achieve:
Requirement | Standard / Detail |
Medical | ENG1 Seafarer Medical Certificate |
Identity | Passport valid for 18+ months |
Visa | C1/D Transit Visa (for USA ports) |
Security | Enhanced Police Background Check |
Safety | STCW (Basic Safety Training) |
If all of this sounds a bit daunting, we have a web page specifically designed to support you in understanding all of this: CLICK HERE
TIP: These 4 essentials in my opinion are mandatory. If you don't have or not willing to gain these, then cruise retail is not for you!

What are the essential soft skills for living onboard a cruise ship?
1) Adaptability
You are going to be asked about how ready you are for onboard life. Don't understand what it will be like yet? Then, I strongly advise you to learn as much as you can about the requirements such as 7-day weeks, long hours on sea day, shared cabins etc. We have plenty more information on our FAQ's page, CLICK HERE. There are also a number of courses in the E-Academy specifically to talk through this subject. click here
2) Have a good understanding and appreciation of different cultures
Working on a cruise ship with up to 2000 other staff, and having guests from 100+ different nations means you need to have a good understanding and appreciation for working with different cultures. You will need to show a high level of curiosity, openness, patience and empathy to ensure that you are seen as ready to work with the rest of the world on a cruise ship. If you love your home comforts more than trying new things, then my advice is to stay at home!
3) Openness to Learn
Cruise retail is all about personal growth and fast learning. You will not be expected to be a 'retail ninja' on your first day, but you will be expected to learn fast, improve your performance, communicate strongly and to understand what is required. How do you approach learning, how do you approach building knowledge, how do you learn from others? If you are willing to put in the graft and the inquisitiveness to get a better understanding, you will succeed. Cruise Retail is like school. As you progress, you will always need to learn more. I cannot recommend enough the training materials we have provided for you in the E-Academy, to show your interviewer what you are learning and what you know you will need to learn. Knowledge is power! A great starting point is our Cruise Retail Diploma - click here.
4) Grit & Resilience
Having worked with many people who didn't succeed in the industry, I can tell you one thing. Cruise retail will be tough. Long hours, high targets and limited time to get your tasks done. Do you have good energy levels, do you have a strong 'get stuff done' ethic. If you are willing to show a lot of grit, resilience and determination to succeed then cruise retail will reward you - and reward you well. The first 2 months onboard will be the toughest of your career, but once you get through that, you will really start to build your skills. Get ready to talk about examples of grit, resilience and readiness in your interview, and to show how you have strong energy, because this is a must-have nautical skill!

What will give you the 'Luxury Specialist' Edge?
1) Brand Ambassadorship
Cruise retail is a perfect place for brand ambassadors. If you have a passion for a brand and can show how you have learnt, grown and developed your understanding, knowledge and success with this brand, then this is a great skill to show your retail recruiter. How did you start? What did you learn? How have you turned passion into sales? If you can show the skill, then make sure you flaunt it! Great passion for brands are perfect for cruise retail.
2) Luxury Brand Knowledge
Cruise retail is the home to luxury brands, particularly in fine jewelry and swiss watches. If you have built good experience and knowledge in this area, then ensure you mention this. If you don't have any experience, then I would recommend doing some research and building knowledge (even if you can't build experience). If you don't know your Breitling from your Chopard, or your Louis Vuitton from your Prada, then you may struggle to convince your interview that you fit into the luxury environment onboard. Again, we have some good courses in the E-Academy to support you here, click here
3) Retail Soft Skills
Be ready to talk in detail about retail soft skills and KPI's that you have developed and learnt well. If you have built the experience and a solid foundation knowledge, then use them to your advantage both on your CV and also in your interview. Upselling, cross selling, visual merchandising, retail inventories, FIFO, margin drivers, rotation. However... don't bluff. Only talk about this if you truly understand it. Retailers will always see through a lack of understanding very quickly. Our "Top 10" courses in the E-Academy can help you here... click here
4) Above and Beyond
How can you show your passion for luxury retail and luxury brands. Whilst not all careers in cruise retail start in luxury, all roads lead to luxury. You cannot be a retail manager without having first learnt and built skills. You cannot be a watch specialist without learning about complications, mechanisms, chronographs etc. You cannot be a jewelry specialist without learning the 4 C's of diamonds. You cannot be a luxury influencer without understanding a luxury mindset. How will you show that you are willing to learn more, understand more and grow more. Cruise retail recruiters are looking at your willingness to go above and beyond the basic knowledge, in order to show you are ready to grow yourself.
