You Shouldn't Have to Pay to Be Ready

Let's say the thing most people in this industry are too polite to say.
You do not need to pay anyone to be "ready" for ship life.
Not for a CV rewrite. Not for an "insider" interview prep call. Not for VIP pre-embarkation access to information that should be free in the first place. None of it.

Here's what's actually going on
There is a whole cottage industry now built around new starters' fear. It knows you're nervous. It knows you don't have anyone in your life who's done this huge step before. It knows you'll Google "how to prepare for cruise ship job" at 1am and land on a funnel designed to turn that uncertainty into a payment.
So it sells you a polished CV template. A "guaranteed" interview script. A VIP Training course. Access to a Facebook group you could have found yourself in ten minutes. And it dresses all of it up as expertise, when most of it is just publicly available information with a price tag stapled on.
Let's call it what it is. A lot of it is a scam — not because the person selling it doesn't know anything, but because they're charging you for something that was never theirs to sell in the first place. The cruise recruitment industry cannot charge candidates for placements under MLC rules, so they are looking for fresh ways of making profit. And to do this, they need you to feel subservient.
The costs that are real
I'm not saying this industry is free to get into. It isn't, and I won't pretend otherwise. You will pay for:
Your medical exam
Your visa
Your STCW certification
Sometimes your first flight to join
Those are real, unavoidable costs. Nobody's getting onboard without covering them.

But your preparation? Your knowledge? Your readiness to actually be ready for interview and to do the job well once you're there? That should never be another line item on the list. The moment someone tells you it has to be, they've stopped trying to help you and started trying to profit from you.
What to do instead
Everything you need to prepare properly is already out there, and most of it costs nothing but your time. Here are some tips from us:
YouTube is full of real crew talking honestly about real ship life
AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude will walk you through interview prep, CV structure, and product knowledge for free, right now, tonight
Industry blogs and forums are full of people who've already made every mistake you're worried about making
Our E-Academy is free to every member — 50+ on-demand and podcast courses, over 100 hours of cruise retail training, sorted by category, with certificates and badges when you finish
Our new Cruise Retail Diploma takes it even further — a structured three-level pathway from Introduction through Product Knowledge to Leadership. Level 3 just launched, and it's the only leadership programme written specifically for this industry. Free, like everything else we build.
Our Learning Library points you to other training worth your time too — Duty Free World Council Academy courses, jewellery training, watches training, liquor training — vetted by us so you're not guessing which free resources are actually worth your evening
And there are dozens more free courses and communities out there doing the same thing we are
None of this requires a credit card. It requires you sitting down and doing the work, and referring to a number of different sources of information.

Why we feel so strongly about this
This isn't a marketing line for us. We started Cruise Retail Academy because of what we watched happen to this industry's people during the pandemic — real uncertainty, real financial hardship, crew separated from the jobs and teams they loved, and still, somehow, their determination to grow and come back stronger never wavered. That's what this industry is built on. Watching that resilience with nothing to show for it is what convinced us that whoever comes next deserves better than to be charged for the one thing that costs us nothing to give: knowledge.
We will never charge for recruitment, and our training is, and always will be, free. Not because we can't monetise it. Because the people on the shop floor are the ones who make this industry work, and they're too often the last ones anyone invests in. We'd rather be the exception.
The real qualification nobody tells you about
Here's the part that actually matters. The industry doesn't just want people who know the product knowledge. It wants people who can figure things out. Who don't wait to be spoon-fed. Who see a problem — "I don't know how to prepare for this" — and go solve it themselves instead of paying someone to make it disappear.
That resilience, that independence, that willingness to go and find the answer yourself — that's not a nice-to-have for ship life. That's the actual job. If you can't be bothered to go find free training before you've even started, how are you going to overcome all sorts of obstacles to achieve an amazing sale before the end of the cruise or handle a guest complaint at sea, alone, with no one to hand it to?
So go find the answer. Ask the question in the comments below. Watch the video. Read the blog. Come to the E-Academy. Do it because you want it badly enough to go and get it — not because someone made you scared enough to feel you have to pay for it.
You don't need their VIP access. You need your own determination. Build that, and everything else follows.
