In the video above, Rob talks through some of the key things you can do before your interview to help you arrive prepared, professional and ready to show the interviewer who you are.
And if you'd like a quick refresher, we've broken down some of the key tips below.
1. Get the Basics Right
Many cruise retail interviews take place online, so start with the simple things.
Before your interview:
Test your camera and microphone
Check your internet connection
Choose a quiet location
Make sure you're well lit
Keep your background clean and professional
Position your camera around eye level
Remove distractions and notifications
Treat a video interview with the same professionalism as an interview in person.
Your environment forms part of that important first impression.
2. Research the Company and Role
Take some time to understand who you're interviewing with.
You don't need to memorise an entire website. Instead, understand:
What the company does
The role you're applying for
Their customers or guests
Their values and culture
Why you genuinely want to work for them
For cruise retail candidates, think about why you want to take your career to sea and what attracts you specifically to working onboard.
If you're asked, “Why do you want to work for us?”, your answer should sound like you — not something copied from the internet.
3. Know Your Own CV
It sounds obvious, but go back and read your CV before your interview.
Anything you've included could become part of the conversation.
Think about genuine examples from your experience involving:
Customer service
Sales
Teamwork
Problem solving
Working under pressure
Leadership
Going above and beyond for a guest or customer
Real experiences help an interviewer understand what you can actually bring to the role.
4. Practise – Don't Memorise
Interview preparation doesn't mean learning answers word for word.
Practise talking naturally about your experience.
Ask a friend to interview you, record yourself answering some common questions or simply practise speaking your answers aloud.
The aim isn't to sound perfect.
It's to become comfortable talking about yourself, your achievements and what you could bring to the opportunity.
5. And Finally… Be Yourself
Your experience might get you the interview.
But the interviewer is also meeting the person who could potentially become part of an international onboard team.
Let them see your personality.
Listen.
Smile.
Engage.
And don't be afraid to take a moment to think before answering.
You don't need to know everything.
You simply need to arrive prepared and ready to have a conversation.
