C1/D Visas, STCW & Medicals: What Do You Need to Work on a Cruise Ship?
If you're applying for your first job on a cruise ship, you'll probably start hearing quite a few new terms.
C1/D visa. STCW. Seafarer's medical and more.
We get questions about these all the time at the Cruise Retail Academy, so Rob has put together a quick video explaining what they are and why you may need them when preparing to work onboard.
Watch: C1/D Visa, STCW and Cruise Ship Medical Explained
What is a C1/D visa?
A C1/D visa is a US crew visa commonly required for crew members joining or working on ships that call at US ports.
Not every candidate will need one immediately, and when you need to apply can depend on the cruise line, your itinerary and your joining arrangements.
One important bit: don't rush out and apply for documents simply because you've heard somebody else needed them.
Follow the instructions you're given for your own application and joining process.
What is STCW?
STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers.
In simple terms, it covers internationally recognised safety training for people working at sea.
Depending on your role and cruise line, you'll be told which STCW training and certification you need before joining.
It's not retail training. It's about preparing you to work safely in a maritime environment — something rather important when your new workplace happens to float. 🚢
What is a cruise ship medical?
Before joining a cruise ship, you'll normally need to be declared medically fit to work at sea.
However, this isn't necessarily as simple as booking a medical yourself.
Different cruise lines and employers can have different requirements, approved doctors, medical forms or processes.
That's why we always encourage candidates to wait for the correct instructions before arranging and paying for a medical.
Preparing for your first cruise ship job
Getting an offer is exciting, but there's usually a period between being selected and actually stepping onboard.
Visas, STCW training, medicals and other documentation are all part of that preparation.
At the Cruise Retail Academy, we help candidates understand the process and prepare for careers in cruise retail before they join their ship.
