What Success at Sea Really Looks Like: Tendai's Story

From land to cruise retail, six months onboard and a career that's continuing to grow.

One of the best parts of my job at the Cruise Retail Academy is hearing from candidates after they've joined their ships.

Sometimes it's a quick message to say they've arrived safely. Sometimes it's a photograph from somewhere incredible.

And sometimes it's a message that reminds me exactly why Adrian and I do what we do.

This week, I saw a LinkedIn post from Tendai, one of our Academy Graduates, celebrating the completion of his six-month contract onboard.

And I have to say, this one made me smile.

Not simply because he'd completed his contract, but because of everything he'd achieved along the way.

Before the ship: Putting in the work

When I first worked with Tendai, he already had a background in sales and customer service on land.

His experience included retail sales, fine jewellery, watches, duty-free shopping and hospitality. He also held a degree in Marketing Management.

He certainly wasn't starting from nothing.

But moving into cruise retail meant taking those skills into a completely different environment.

Working onboard isn't quite the same as working in a shop back home. You're living and working with people from around the world, learning new products, adapting to ship life and delivering great guest experiences every day.

And that's where preparation becomes so important.

Tendai took his preparation seriously.

He worked hard through the Academy's learning and training, developing his knowledge and preparing himself for the opportunity ahead.

I remember how much effort he put into getting ready.

We could provide the guidance, resources and support, but Tendai was the one who had to put the work in.

And he did.

Six months later: Look at him now!

Fast-forward six months and Tendai has completed his contract working in jewellery retail at sea.

But what I particularly enjoyed about his LinkedIn update was that he didn't just talk about completing his contract.

He talked about how much he'd grown.

During those six months, Tendai had opportunities to host promotional events, help launch new product lines and take part in luxury watch presentations.

These weren't just sales activities.

They were opportunities to build his confidence, develop his communication skills and learn how to create memorable experiences for guests.

Anyone who has worked in cruise retail knows that standing up in front of a group of guests and confidently presenting a product takes practice.

It's a skill you develop.

And seeing Tendai enjoying that side of the job is fantastic.

The photographs tell their own story

Take a look at the pictures Tendai shared.

There he is hosting events, working alongside his colleagues, getting involved in promotions and enjoying some pretty spectacular scenery in Alaska.

And there's something else that comes across in those photos.

He's smiling.

He's enjoying himself.

He's part of a team.

For me, that's just as important as the sales figures and achievements.

A career at sea can be demanding, but it can also give people opportunities, friendships and experiences they might never have imagined before joining.

Tendai looks like somebody who has embraced all of it.

Still learning, even after joining

Another part of Tendai's update really caught my attention.

Alongside completing his contract, he also completed the Jewelry Essentials course with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

That's a great achievement.

And it says something about his approach to his career.

He hasn't treated getting onboard as the finish line.

He's continued learning, building his product knowledge and developing professionally while working at sea.

That willingness to keep learning is something I always encourage candidates to think about.

Getting your first opportunity is important.

What you do with that opportunity matters just as much.

What success at sea really looks like

When people think about a successful cruise retail career, they often think about sales targets, commission, promotions or moving into management.

And of course, those things matter.

But I think Tendai's story shows another side of success.

It's somebody who worked hard to prepare before joining.

Somebody who took on new responsibilities, developed his confidence and continued learning.

Somebody who became part of an international team, made friendships and experienced places he might never otherwise have visited.

And somebody who can now look back on six months and see just how far he's come.

That's success too.

A personal message to Tendai

Tendai, I was really pleased to read your update and see those photographs.

I remember the effort you put into preparing for this opportunity, and seeing what you've achieved over these six months makes me incredibly happy.

You should be proud of yourself.

You've worked hard, you've continued learning and, perhaps most importantly, you look like you've genuinely enjoyed the experience.

That's what I love seeing.

Congratulations on completing your contract, and well done on your GIA qualification too.

Enjoy your well-earned break, and I look forward to seeing what you do next.
